Total and per-person amount

The tip amount is the selected percentage of the base amount you entered. The total is bill plus tip. The split amount divides the total by the number of people.

Pre-tax and post-tax tipping can produce different tip amounts. The difference is usually small on modest bills, but it grows as the bill and tax increase.

The calculator does not tell you what you must tip. It shows the math so you can make a clear choice.

Tip formula

Tip amount = bill amount x tip percent / 100. Total = bill amount + tip amount. Split total = total / number of people.

If you tip on pre-tax subtotal, use the subtotal as the base. If you tip on the final receipt total, use the total after tax as the base.

If a service charge is already included, decide whether it replaces the tip or whether you want to add an additional tip. The receipt wording matters.

Splitting dinner

For an 80 dollar pre-tax bill and a 20 percent tip, calculate 80 x 20 / 100. The tip is 16 dollars.

If the after tax total is 86 dollars and you tip on that amount, 20 percent is 17.20 dollars.

If four people split an 96 dollar total, each person pays 24 dollars before any separate item adjustments.

Pre-tax versus post-tax tipping

The most common mistake is not checking whether the receipt suggestions use pre-tax or post-tax totals.

Another mistake is double tipping when automatic gratuity is already included for a large party.

Also remember that equal split and pay for what you ordered are different. The calculator can split equally, but itemized fairness may need separate math.

Should I calculate tip before tax or after tax?

Many people calculate tip on the pre-tax subtotal because tax is not part of the service. Others use the after tax total for simplicity.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. That gives an equal split.

If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each persons share first and then add their chosen tip.

For group meals, decide whether tax and tip are split equally or by item cost before collecting money.

What if gratuity is already included?

If automatic gratuity is included, the receipt may already contain a tip or service charge. Read the line carefully before adding another tip.

Some receipts still show an additional tip line. That usually means extra tip is optional.

When unsure, ask the restaurant how the charge is handled.

How do I calculate 20 percent tip quickly?

Move the decimal one place left to find 10 percent, then double it. For an 80 dollar bill, 10 percent is 8 dollars and 20 percent is 16 dollars.

For 15 percent, find 10 percent and 5 percent, then add them.

Should service fees reduce the tip?

It depends on what the fee is. Some service fees go to staff, while others may cover business costs or delivery platform charges.
