Final Grade Calculator

Needed final score = (target - current x (1 - final weight)) / final weight.

Your result will appear here. Enter values and calculate.

Enter current grade, target, and final weight

Enter your current course grade, your target course grade and the final exam weight. The calculator returns the score needed on the final.

Use the current grade before the final exam. If your gradebook already includes the final as a zero, remove that zero first or use the correct current grade.

This tool is for planning and checking scenarios. Your official grade still depends on the class grading policy, rounding rules and any remaining assignments.

Score needed on the final

The needed final score tells what exam percentage would bring the overall course grade to your target.

If the needed score is above 100 percent, the target is not reachable with the final alone under the entered weights.

If the needed score is below 0 percent, you have already reached the target mathematically. Still confirm whether passing the final is required by course policy.

Final grade formula

The final course grade equals current grade x current weight plus final exam grade x final weight.

Current weight is 1 minus final weight. Rearranging gives needed final = (target grade - current grade x current weight) / final weight.

Weights can be entered as percentages or decimals, but they must represent the same idea. A 25 percent final has a weight of 0.25.

A final exam target example

Suppose your current grade is 82, your target is 85 and the final is worth 30 percent. The current work is worth 70 percent.

Calculate 82 x 0.70 = 57.4. Then 85 - 57.4 = 27.6. Divide 27.6 by 0.30.

You need a 92 percent on the final to reach an 85 overall.

Using the wrong final weight

The biggest mistake is using the wrong current grade. Some gradebooks show a grade with missing final work counted as zero.

Another mistake is entering final weight as 30 instead of 0.30 when the calculator expects a decimal, or the reverse when it expects a percent.

Also remember that remaining projects or category rules can change the result. The calculator only uses the values you enter.

If your gradebook has categories, make sure the final exam weight is the course weight, not only a test category weight.

Final Grade Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Use your current grade, target grade and the final exam weight. The calculator solves for the final exam score that makes the weighted average equal the target.

The final weight is crucial. A final worth 10 percent changes the course grade much less than a final worth 40 percent.

Make sure the current grade does not already include the final exam as a zero.

What if the needed final score is over 100 percent?

That means the target grade is not reachable with the final exam alone under the entered values.

You may need a lower target, extra credit, changed remaining assignments or a different grading rule.

Check the current grade and final weight first. A small input mistake can make the needed score look impossible.

What if the needed final score is negative?

A negative needed score means you have already reached the target mathematically, even if you scored zero on the final.

That does not always mean you can skip the exam. Some courses require completion of the final regardless of average.

Use the result for math planning, then check the course policy.

Why does final exam weight matter so much?

The final weight tells how much of the course grade the exam controls. A higher weight means the final can move the grade more.

If the final is worth 50 percent, it can strongly change the outcome. If it is worth 5 percent, the current grade mostly determines the result.

That is why two students with the same current grade may need different scores in different classes.

Can this calculator handle remaining homework too?

This calculator is built for one final assessment weight. If you still have homework, projects or quizzes left, combine them carefully or use a broader grade planner.

You can model a remaining category as the final item if it has one clear weight.

For several remaining pieces, calculate the course structure first so the weights are accurate.
